Danse Pacifique was designed by Laurence Bourthoumieux (or ‘Toutsy’) for the Autumn/Winter 2021/2022 collection. The design serves as a vivid tribute to the traditional culture, performance, and ceremonial dress of Papua New Guinea. It captures the energy of celebratory dances through a brilliant explosion of geometric patterns, tropical palm fronds, and ornate bird-of-paradise feathers radiating from a central headpiece motif.

The architectural geometry of the design means it changes character entirely depending on how you fold it.  Folding it into a bias band pulls the linear feather patterns forward, making a vibrant statement around the neck, whereas tying it over the hair emphasizes the sweeping tropical palms and framing borders.

Hermes writes:  Headdresses adorned with colorful feathers are delicately placed below shells characteristic of the Pacific Ocean – in particular cowries, which are recognizable due to their oval shape and jagged center. Until the beginning of the 20th century, these were the main currency of exchange in the archipelagos and they often adorned ceremonial costumes. Here, the designer Laurence Bourthoumieux pays tribute to the culture of Papua New Guinea. More than 700 different languages coexist in this part of the world, which is also renowned for the diversity of its landscapes, tropical forests, mountains and savannah.

Laurence Bourthoumieux, also known as Toutsy, is a gifted French artist and designer known for her remarkable work with Hermès. Born Laurence Thioune, she signed her earlier works as L.T. and later adopted the pseudonym Toutsy after her name changed, presumably due to marriage.
