Designed in 1961 and reissued in 1965, it was a collaborative design by Robert Dumas and Christiane Vauzelles.
AI tells us: ‘Gastronomie’ celebrates the opulence of French culinary culture and the art of entertaining. The motif was co-created by the prolific Hermès designer Christiane Vauzelles and Robert Dumas (the head of Hermès at the time). It’s styled like a classic still-life painting, the central motif depicting a grand, festive banquet, unfolding with luxurious food items, including whole lobsters, fish, cheese boards, fresh fruits, wine carafes, a towering croquembouche pastry, and three-flame candelabras.
The design is most famous on a black background, which makes the vibrant colours of the ingredients and polished silverware dramatically pop. It was also produced in white.
Because it was only issued a couple of times in the 1960s (with a few ultra-rare variations printed for Hennessy Cognac), it is difficult to find on the secondary market, and frequently sought after to be framed as kitchen or dining room art.
