Hermes Lettres Au Carre (Letter Square) with Perfect Box, Tissue and Card

Highly sought after and very rare – a modern collectors item.  Here we have the whole package which feels as new, the Hermes scarf appearing unworn with all the original sheen, stiffness and folds of a brand new scarf, presented in its own pristine packaging.  But looking at the scarf really hard, we’ve found three tiny marks.  We’ve made the difficult decision not to send it to the cleaners, in order to retain that otherwise untouched feeling. Even the original gift card is present (although it is has been completed and is addressed to ‘Mary’!) Scarf condition 9.95.

The scarf was issued in 2018 and appears to have been a design by the House of Hermes itself “Archives Hermes”. It is currently available in a long rectangular cashmere version.

Hermes writes: “Fantasy alphabet, cut-out blue and red leather” is how these letters from the early 1930s were itemised in the house’s registers. Very early on, Hermès started offering its customers the chance to personalize bags, luggage and even clothing. This skill was a continuation of its first métier as a harness-maker and saddler, at a time when horses’ harnesses, blankets and hoods were marked with the initials of their owners. Typography therefore became one of the house designers’ fields of excellence. The lively, stylised characters of this Art Deco alphabet have lost none of their appeal.

AI tells us: the Hermès scarf collection features several alphabet-themed designs, most notably the “Lettres au Carré” and “Lettres Équestres” motifs. These graphic styles celebrate typography through the brand’s historic design archives. Lettres Équestres is a playful, multi-coloured alphabet blending traditional horse-riding imagery into the structure of the letters. Also available are Petite Casaque, and Alphabet (by A.M. Cassandre) a vintage piece featuring prominent, stark lettering; and finally, Faune Lettrée: an intricate design where animals twist and pose to form each letter of the alphabet.
