Hermes Selle d’Apparat Marocaine (Ceremonial Maroccan Saddle)

Wow! What astounding colours! This Hermes scarf feels barely worn, appears spotless, and comes complete with care label.  Condition 9.9/10.

Designed by polish artist Wlodek Kaminski in 2008, it  pays homage to the ornate, handcrafted equestrian equipment traditionally used by Moroccan horsemen in cultural celebrations and parades, for important rituals and official displays of heritage. Hermes has a particular penchant for equestrian tack themed designs, with a particular emphasis on horses’ saddles!

Kaminski began designing silk carrés for Hermès in 1987, specialising in highly intricate, historical, equestrian, and celestial themes. His work is deeply appreciated by luxury collectors for its sharp attention to detail and traditional storytelling. Some of his most famous designs include: La Voie Lactée (1999): a dramatic, highly collectible celestial motif illustrating the Milky Way; Balade en Berline (2015): a design featuring the historic Gothic-style Berlin carriage of Spanish King Ferdinand VII; Selle de Dignitaire (2018) / Selle des Steppes (2021): elaborate compositions focusing on ornately decorated ceremonial saddles from different global cultures; Boucles et Galons du Tsar: A masterfully detailed look at historical imperial military braids, buckles, and trims; and Coupé de Gala: a vibrant tribute to classic festive horse-drawn carriages.

Born in 1938, Kaminski graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in 1963. In 1985 he settled in France, obtaining French citizenship in 1991. He has been designing for Hermes since 1987. In 1991 he attained his own atelier in the cité Montmartre-aux-artistes, a complex of 180 artists’ studios and apartments built in the 1930s in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. Portraits of the Mayors of Kraków (Stanisław Klimecki and Bolesław Czuchajowski) by Kamiński are exhibited in the Presidential Hall of the Kraków City Hall Building.
